Overview
Void is an open-source AI code editor designed as a privacy-first alternative to tools like Cursor and Windsurf. Operating as a fork of VS Code, Void ensures a frictionless transition for developers by allowing them to import existing themes, keybinds, and settings with a single click. Its primary differentiator is its commitment to full data privacy; Void eliminates the middleman and does not route messages through private backends. Users can connect directly to frontier LLMs—such as Claude 3.7, Grok 3, o4-mini, and Gemini 2.5—or host local, open-source models like DeepSeek, Llama, and Qwen. It offers a comprehensive suite of AI features, including tab autocomplete, inline quick edits, and custom support for Fill-in-the-Middle (FIM) models. For advanced tasks, Void features an Agent Mode that leverages MCP to autonomously search, create, edit, and delete files with terminal access, even supporting models that lack native tool calling. A safer Gather Mode allows for read-only codebase exploration. Please note: As of recent updates, active development on Void is paused, and some features may be outdated or broken.
